As electric vehicle (EV) uptake in the automotive market continues to grow, new analysis has highlighted the financial reality of the situation for UK workshops when it comes to EV servicing.
According to research from Auto Data Solutions, EVs generate around £175 less per vehicle per year in workshop revenue than their internal combustion engine (ICE) counterparts.
BM Catalysts has long maintained the notion that ICE vehicles remain the beating heart of the aftermarket and recent analysis reinforces this.
The shortfall in revenue of £210 million across the industry from EV servicing is driven by a straightforward mechanical reality. EVs have significantly fewer serviceable wear and tear components. No oil changes, fewer consumables and reduced mechanical wear means fewer visits to garages and workshops. The result of this means a shift away from predictable, recurring servicing income that workshops have traditionally relied upon.
EV servicing to grow but ICE is not dead
Research undertaken by Auto Data Solutions makes clear that this is not a temporary fluctuation. It is a long-term structural change to the landscape of the aftermarket. EV servicing will become more commonplace in the future.
Despite this, the vehicle car parc remains overwhelmingly dominated by ICE vehicles, ensuring millions of petrol and diesel cars will continue to require regularly maintenance, replacement parts and emissions components, with no sign of this diminishing any time soon.
But the number of EVs continues to rise, and with the UK government committed to banning sales of new petrol and diesel models from 2030, the car parc will become more diluted. However, for those where an EV does not suit their everyday usage, they will turn to older ICE models in the used car market. This means petrol and diesel average ages will continue to increase, as will their need for servicing.
As such, while a transition to EV servicing, and therefore a financial impact, has begin, it will not have a large impact on the market overnight.
