Independent garages can play key role as oil prices rise

The increase in oil prices is putting pressure on motorists, as costs of running a vehicle continue to increase. However, independent garages have an opportunity to demonstrate their value to communities and support customers.

The  network is calling on the industry to proactively promote vehicle servicing as a fuel-saving measure, as rising global oil prices push motoring costs to the forefront of consumer concern.

With fuel prices remaining elevated and many drivers reconsidering how often they use their cars, the network says independent garages have both a commercial and a community responsibility to engage customers who may be unaware of the direct link between vehicle maintenance and running costs.

Maintaining fuel efficiency

The link between vehicle condition and fuel consumption is well established. Under-inflated tyres, a blocked air filter, degraded engine oil or a failing sensor can each contribute to measurable increases in running costs; costs that a routine service visit can help to avoid. Eurorepar Car Service says these are messages independent garages should be communicating actively, not waiting for customers to ask.

“Drivers are under real financial pressure right now, and many simply don’t realise that a neglected service schedule is costing them money every time they fill up,” commented Neil Gibbs, Head of Network at Eurorepar Car Service.

“Independent garages are trusted, local businesses and perfectly placed to have that conversation with customers. A well-serviced car is a cheaper car to run. That’s a message worth shouting about.”

The network is also highlighting the risk of lower mileage creating a false sense of security among drivers. A vehicle used less frequently is not immune to deterioration: batteries lose charge, brake discs corrode, and seals degrade without regular heat cycles. Garages should reframe periodic checks as essential for any vehicle, regardless of annual mileage.

Independent garages urged to act

The commercial message for independent garage owners is equally pointed. Reduced driving habits can mean fewer distress calls and less reactive footfall. Garages are therefore being urged to make use of available tools to drive proactive outreach such as service reminders, seasonal check campaigns and post-visit follow-ups, to maintain order book levels and reinforce their value to local customers.

“Times are tight for motorists, and you can see it,” Gibbs added. “People are putting off things they would normally just get done. But that’s exactly when we need to be talking to them, not waiting for them to come to us.

“A quick call to say ‘your service is due and here’s why it matters right now’ goes a long way. We’re not here to sell people things they do not need. We’re here to keep their cars running and save them money where we can.”
