Land Rover Discovery tops list of least reliable vehicles

The Land Rover Discovery has topped the list of least reliable vehicles on the road today, with issues most likely to emerge over time.

Studying data from its own resources, Warrantywise has found that the model sits at the bottom of its Overall Reliability Scores. The 10 least reliable models all fell into the Premium sector, where models typically sit at around 17.2 to 28, out of a total score of 100, when it comes to reliability.

Models in the premium segment typically tend to see repair requests at around six to seven-years-old, and at just under 70,000 miles. That points to issues emerging later in ownership, often influenced as much by servicing, driving conditions, and usage as by the original build quality.

The warranty provider found that premium and more technically complex models appear more frequently in these lower-scoring bands. As these vehicles age, the added demands of advanced electronics, larger platforms, and more sophisticated powertrains can increase the likelihood of faults.

All 10 of the least reliable vehicles featured fall within the premium used car market, where higher upfront costs are expected. According to Warrantywise, on average, repair costs come in at £2,051.63.

Premium does not mean reliable

While many may believe that buying a vehicle in the premium segment is a guarantee of quality, it is not a promise of reliability. According to Warrantywise, there are several factors that work towards premium models appearing frequently in lists of the least reliable vehicles.

Firstly, modern premium models are packed with advanced systems, from sophisticated infotainment setups to complex powertrains, ADAS features and more. These are designed to enhance the driving experience, but also introduce more potential points of failure over time.

Many models in the segment are also often larger SUVs and executive saloons, which place greater strain on components such as suspension systems, drivetrains and braking, leading to increased wear rates. This makes them an easy inclusion in the lists of least reliable vehicles over time.

Common repairs of least reliable vehicles

According to data from Warrantywise, the most common repair category is emissions-related issues, affecting four out of the 10 vehicles.

This reflects wider trends in the automotive industry, where stricter emissions standards and more complex systems can lead to increasing sensor faults, exhaust system issues, and problems with either the EGR or DPF.

In addition, electrical system faults and suspension-related issues appear regularly across the dataset.

For Warrantywise,  these findings reinforce the idea that modern vehicles, particularly premium ones, require significant ongoing care and maintenance to perform reliably over time.

Yet despite the frequence in the least reliable vehicles tables, models in the premium sector remain highly desirable. This id down to their offer of spacious interors, more luxury materials used, and the comfort that comes with this.

“Many of the lower-scoring vehicles sit in premium segments, yet they remain highly desirable for a reason,” explained Antony Diggins, Managing Director of Warrantywise. “The key is balancing that appeal with the reality of potential repair costs down the line.”

For workshops, understanding the list of least reliable vehicles can mean a head start in preparing for their arrival in workshops. Keeping a watch for these types of vehicles being booked in, allows for the potential of further checks and preventative maintenance offers for those owners.
