Ben, the automotive industry charity, has just released a new short film to raise awareness about the topic of suicide on International Men’s Day, for which this year’s theme is ‘zero male suicide’.
The short film, called ‘Alright mate’, also aims to challenge perceptions and is a longer piece of video content, at around eight minutes long, so Ben encourages automotive industry people to dedicate the time to watch it.
One of the main characters, Aidan (Ade), is played by Alastair Ellery who starred in the Netflix film, The Strays. It was filmed and directed by Chris Harris.
The purpose of the film is also to raise awareness about Ben to further spread the message that the charity is there for everyone who works, or has worked, in the automotive industry, making sure they know about the support they can access when times are tough.
Ben has also recently developed new online support and training for automotive industry people at: www.ben.org.uk/suicideprevention
Important awareness on International Men’s Day
Each year, International Men’s Day aims to highlight the positive value that men bring to their worlds. This year, the theme of the day is ‘Zero Male Suicide’, with a focus on ensuring that men know they can reach out for help if they are in crisis.
“Many men find it difficult to open up and talk about feelings, with the traditional stereotype that males must be strong, showing no weakness in life,” comments Auto Repair Focus Editor Phil Curry. “This is something that is now impossible in society today. There are so many pressures on everyone at this time, with costs rising, bleakness in the news, and even with the seasons changing.
“Asking for help is not a weakness, but a sign of strength, by realising that there may be a struggle ahead with mental health issues, but speaking to someone, a friend, family member, or reaching out to Ben, is a step forward forwards. This is the purpose of International Men’s Day, to raise awareness of the struggle that sometimes go on behind closed doors.”
Ben’s video, launched on International Men’s Day, highlights the need for men in the automotive industry to open up to someone if they feel they are struggling. The powerful message contained within aims to inspire, and help those struggling to understand that they are not alone, and reaching out is vital in order to feel better.
