Castrol has launched two new high-performance fully synthetic fluids designed for electric vehicles (EVs) that feature transmissions with wet e-motors. Castrol ON EV Transmission Fluid W2 and W5 have been tested in bespoke development programmes to go further, charge faster and last longer.
The low-viscosity formulations of Castrol ON Transmission EV Fluid W2 and W5 have been specifically developed to deliver low electrical conductivity and enhanced system protection, helping the e-motor run at cooler temperatures and at optimal efficiency. Both products have been designed and extensively tested to handle the high torque outputs that EV motors can generate even from low speeds.
Developed for MG and BYD
Castrol ON EV Transmission Fluid W2 has been developed for MG Motor, and is compatible with the MG HS Plug-in Hybrid and MG ZS EV.
Castrol ON EV Transmission Fluid W5 has also been developed for BYD and can be used for the wet e-motors found in the Seal saloon, as well as the upcoming Seal U DM-I Plug-in Hybrid SUV. The W5 formulation is also compatible withBYD models that feature a dry e-motor, including the Atto 3 and Dolphin.
“The introduction of these new fluids is the culmination of detailed research and cooperative efforts with MG, BYD, and our suppliers,” commented Paul Beasley, Expert Technologist, Driveline and EV Aftermarket Product Development at Castrol. “The ability to be compatible with the wide array of materials and electrical components present in the motor, which contrasts with conventional transmission fluids that may provoke corrosion and damage, is critical.
“These two new Castrol ON Transmission Fluids harness cutting-edge technology to excel within the transmission while also delivering protection for the motor.”
Continuing the Castrol On EV family
The launch of the two new wet EV transmission fluids follows the introduction of Castrol ON EV Transmission Fluids D1 and D2 in 2022, the company’s first dedicated products for EVs in aftersales. These fully synthetic fluids are suitable for many EVs that operate powertrains with dry e-motors, offering high levels of gear and bearing protection.
Castrol ON EV Transmission Fluid D1 is compatible with the dry e-motors found in a range of Hyundai and Kia models, including the Kona Electric, Soul EV and Niro EV. This fluid can also be used in the GWM ORA 03. Castrol ON EV Transmission Fluid D2 is compatible with the majority of Volkswagen Group vehicles based on the MEB platform, including the Volkswagen ID.3, ID.4, ID.5 and ID. Buzz, Škoda Enyaq, Cupra Born and Tavascan, and Audi Q4 e-tron.
Castrol is continuing to develop and release lubricant options for EVs, as the market adapts to the new zero-emission technology. Earlier this year, it also launched a range of EV coolants, which will allow electric vehicles to be charged more rapidly.
