Milltek Sport has underlined its commitment to promoting responsible tuning practices, as it continues its efforts to prevent the use of non-road-legal aftermarket parts on the street.
The company now has ECE type approval on over 900 products across its range of premium exhaust systems for the latest generation of performance cars, purposely designed to comply with all conformity, environmental and safety requirements stipulated by the European Commission.
The extensive range includes cat-back, axle-back and particulate filter-back exhaust systems, plus a range of ECE approved catalysts which are legal for use on the road, offering customers significant improvements on their factory exhaust system.
Since 2009, all Milltek Sport products have been clearly stamped with their suitability for use on the street, with all exhausts designed for motorsport purposes stamped and clearly labelled with ‘not for road use’ or ‘for motorsport use only’ markings, corresponding with additional information available on the company’s dealer portal. All systems are also subject to the company’s extensive R&D process, and are designed specifically with ECE type approval in mind.
Rule acceptance key for Milltek Sport
Milltek Sport is also working closely with its international dealer network to ensure all associated tuning specialists understand the rules, as well as the risks involved for those who don’t comply with legislation.
Over the last six months, two tuning companies, not associated with Milltek Sport, were prosecuted by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA), after fitting vehicles with parts that were illegal for road use due to the incorrect removal of exhaust silencers and catalytic converters necessary to reduce tailpipe emissions.
Milltek Sport is a founding member of the Performance Automotive Aftermarket Association’s Safe Modification and Responsible Tuning campaign (SMART), established to bring some of the most respected names in the performance tuning industry together to promote safe, legal and socially responsible tuning, while acknowledging the popularity, passion and enthusiasm of the modified car community.
The company also recently supported Devon & Cornwall Police by supplying and installing a fully ECE-approved system on its innovative Focus RS ‘police car’ – a modified example driven by the Force’s Sergeant Owen Messenger and used as part of a modified car community engagement project funded by Vision Zero South West, a road safety partnership aiming to reduce road deaths in the area. The exhaust system fitted is currently the only aftermarket performance exhaust available for the Mk3 Focus RS that is road legal in the UK.
Steve Pound, Managing Director of Milltek Sport, said: “Over the last 40 years, we have developed a reputation for producing high quality, premium exhaust systems to suitable for a wide range of applications, whether that is on the street, or on the circuit. We are proud to be a trusted name in the performance tuning industry, and believe we have a responsibility to do everything we can to ensure our products are always used for their intended purpose.
“Achieving ECE approval on over 900 of our products reflects our commitment to manufacturing exhaust systems of the highest quality, and we will continue to collaborate with the PAAA to promote safe and responsible practices across the industry.”
